Program Director’s Message
Thank you for taking the time to browse through the Polk State College Department of Nursing website. You cannot go wrong with choosing such a rewarding profession for your career.
The Department of Nursing was established in 1965 under a grant from the Kellogg Foundation and graduated its first class of nurses in 1967. It is estimated that approximately 60% of the registered nurses in Polk County are graduates of our associate degree program. In August 2011 we added an RN to BSN baccalaureate program so that our own associate degree graduates, as well as graduates of other associate degree and diploma programs, could continue their education and advance their career goals. The first group of baccalaureate students graduated in December of 2012.
Currently, there are approximately 300 students during any given term in the associate degree program and approximately the same number in the baccalaureate program. Classes are available in both Lakeland and Winter Haven. The transition option of the associate degree program, which is for individuals with a previous healthcare certificate or license, has its nursing classes on the Lakeland campus. The generic option for individuals new to healthcare has classes on both the Winter Haven campus and the Lakeland campus, depending on the individual courses. Baccalaureate courses are provided online. Both campuses provide excellent resources to facilitate and enhance your education.
The Nursing faculty, staff, and students at Polk State College look forward to welcoming you to nursing and to helping you reach your goal of becoming a new member of the nursing profession or expanding your role as you pursue a baccalaureate degree in nursing. My office is located on the Winter Haven campus, WSC 103. The door is open so feel free to stop by and chat or call the Administrative Assistant at 863.297.1039.
