Emergency Medical Responder

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) is often the first-tier medically trained person to arrive at emergencies. Treatment provided by Emergency Medical Responders can often mean the difference between life and death because it is delivered before more advanced emergency care is able to arrive.

The emergency medical responder course at Polk State is the entry-level class to the EMS program and precedes more advanced tiers. Participants of this course can expect to learn about current techniques in a traditional classroom setting, with some online components. While hands-on skills and scenarios are practiced in a laboratory setting. There are employment opportunities available to graduates who obtain national certification as an EMR.

This course also prepares you to advance to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Program Hours

The EMR course is a combination class, which includes didactic lectures, practical skills lab, and mock scenarios. Classes are held once a week, either day or night. Students must attend the practical skills lab about at least a week. Time management alongside out-of-class work will be required in order to successfully complete this course.

Working Sites

EMRs are employed by private ambulance and medical transportation companies.
